Movie Review: " Halloween Ends " The horror franchise ends with a whimper rather than a bang

Jamie Lee Curtis and a few other legacy characters remain in Haddonfield in the slasher series' 13th and (hopefully) final installment

Halloween comes to an end... with a whimper of franchise brain death. The series has finally been cancelled (until such future time as it is considered expedient to reconnect the life-support machine). It is directed by David Gordon Green, who began his career with Malickian drama before moving on to comedy before being assigned the final three-movie branded Halloween content tranche with co-writer Danny McBride. And it's the most uninspired finale you've ever seen. There are a few lively moments, and the famous jabbing piano music is always triggering in a good way, but this is a film with a large kitchen knife inserted deeply into each vital organ.

As the final curtain falls, a few OG legacy characters hang out in the fictitious town of Haddonfield, Illinois, the scene of all the carnage. Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role as Laurie, who first faced off against demonic killer Michael Myers in 1978. She has survived numerous incursions by the masked bore and is now a grandmother scribbling her memoirs, which appear to contain her less-than-compelling observations about evil and morality, which I suspect her editor will cut. Her hot granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak), who also fought off Myers in the previous film, lives with her. Lindsey (Kyle Richards), one of the original film's teenagers, now works behind a bar, as does Frank Hawkins (Will Patton), Myers' original In the 2018 version, the arresting officer (now retired) has a crush on Laurie. And, to make matters worse, Myers himself is still at large.

However, the horror baton is now being passed to a younger generation. Corey Cunningham (Rohan Campbell) is a young man who was wrongfully blamed for the death of a child he was babysitting. Moody and estranged from the community, he discovers the legendary killer hiding in a strange hobbit hole on the outskirts of town and then teams up with him, stabbing, slashing, and whacking. Allyson, who is moody herself, then begins a relationship with him.

It can't possibly end well. In fact, it ends disastrously. In every way. Myers' mystery has long since deflated and become inert, and when he is unmasked, the camera can't quite bring itself to show us his pointless old face (unlike the unhelmeting of Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi, which did at least show us what the great villain looked like). The only thing that makes me nervous is thinking about how long this has been going on.
